Become a Catechist

You do not need to be perfect to help lead others to Christ.

Today more than ever, young people need:

To hear the Good News of Jesus Christ

Positive Catholic role models

Adults willing to listen, encourage, and guide

A place where faith feels real, lived, and joyful

That is where catechists make an extraordinary difference.

“I Could Never Do That..”

Many people feel called to serve, but hesitate because they think:

“I don’t know enough.”

“I’ve never taught before.”

“What if I say something wrong?”

“What if I can’t answer questions?”

“I’m not holy enough.”

“I don’t know how to handle kids.”

“I’m just an ordinary person.”

“I don’t have time.”

The truth is, most catechists begin with many of those same fears.

But then they discover that God can work powerfully through ordinary people willing to say yes.

They Said It…

  • "I value helping the kids understand the teachings of the Church and seeing them grow in their faith."

  • "I love seeing the kids' faces light up when they answer a question correctly. I honestly feel that I get more from the kids than they get from me!"

  • "This role has offered me the ability to grow and learn spiritually. I also love the opportunity to spread guidance and teaching to our youth, as they are our next leaders!"

  • "I love my students. Each and every one of them brighten my week."

  • "We teach the children, and in doing so, they teach and inspire us."

  • "This role has offered me the ability to grow and learn spiritually. I also love the opportunity to spread guidance and teaching to our youth, as they are our next leaders!"

You will be supported.

Today’s catechetical resources are stronger and more engaging than ever before. Catechists receive:

  • Prepared lesson plans and teaching guides

  • Strong Catholic curriculum and media resources

  • Ongoing mentoring and support

  • Training and formation opportunities

  • A supportive catechist community

We are committed to creating a ministry culture where volunteers feel:

  • Supported

  • Appreciated

  • Prepared

  • Encouraged

  • Respected in how their time is used

Your Questions, Answered.

  • No. A willingness to grow in faith, care for children, and serve faithfully is what matters most. We provide resources, guidance, and support along the way.

  • Many catechists begin feeling exactly the same way. You are not expected to have all the answers. God often works through ordinary people who are simply willing to say yes. And when we can (based on the number of volunteers we have), we place two adults in a classroom.

  • This year, we are expanding our support for catechists through:

    • Pre-year training and formation days

    • In-service gatherings throughout the year for mentorship, idea sharing, and encouragement

    • Clear teaching frameworks and classroom guidance

    • Engaging videos, digital resources, and ready-to-use materials

    • Ongoing communication and responsive leadership support

  • Weekly sessions typically run between 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes.

  • We understand that life is full. That is why whenever possible we place two adults in a classroom and operate a substitution list.

  • All adult volunteers complete Safe Environment (Virtus) training and a background check through the Diocese of Charleston.

  • Yes. Substitute catechists, hospitality volunteers, event support, and administrative roles are all important parts of the ministry.

  • Our classes are taught in English, and bilingual books are used to support Spanish-speaking families. You do not need perfect English to serve in many volunteer roles. Hospitality, classroom assistance, relationship-building, and supporting children are all valuable parts of the ministry.
